Overview
AL GS1 is a GS1-128 (EAN-128) barcode engine for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. It encodes and decodes standard GS1 barcodes, manages the Application Identifiers and GTIN/SSCC, and - through a Web API and AL Message Passing - enables logistics automation (scan to lot/weight/pallet on the document) and Zebra labels.
Adopting GS1 standards in the ERP improves data quality, traceability and supply-chain interoperability, and lets you automate load/unload from a barcode scan instead of typing.
Key features
- Encode / decode GS1-128 - build the barcode from a GS1 template using document data (SSCC, GTIN, lot, dates, serial, net/gross weight, volume, quantity per pack...) and decode a scanned barcode into its Application Identifiers.
- Configurable AI master - length, fixed/max length, regex and data type per Application Identifier.
- GS1 templates (header/line) with a release status and a source (company/customer/vendor/group), validated against GS1 rules.
- Bidirectional GTIN via GTIN Source - decode a vendor barcode, encode a customer-specific one, with fixed-quantity vs variable-weight accounting that ties GS1 to catch weight.
- GTIN and SSCC generation - GS1 prefix + number series + GS1 check digit, plus ITF-14 conversion.
- Scan capture via Web API - a barcode buffer linked to the document line is processed and connected to the document.
- Assignment over the bus - lot/SSCC/weight dispatched via AL Message Passing to AL Tracking (lot/pallet) and AL Catch Weight (weight).
- Zebra labels - feeds the AL Zebra Print Label template with a tag per AI, including the GS1-128 barcode.
Business benefits
- GS1 standards in the ERP - better data quality, traceability and supply-chain interoperability.
- Scan-driven logistics - load/unload from a barcode scan, no manual entry.
- One engine, both ways - encode for labels and decode for inbound, plus GTIN/SSCC generation.
- Platform integration - Zebra labels, advanced tracking and catch weight, all connected over the bus.
Typical scenarios
- Inbound by scan - decode a supplier GS1-128 to resolve item, lot, weight and SSCC on the receipt.
- Outbound labels - encode the GS1-128 for shipment/pallet labels (Zebra).
- Variable-weight goods - variable-weight GTINs link GS1 to catch weight.
What makes AL GS1 different
- A real GS1-128 engine - encode and decode with a configurable, regex-validated AI master.
- Bidirectional GTIN - decode vendor barcodes and encode customer-specific ones, with variable-weight support.
- GTIN and SSCC generation with number series and the GS1 check digit.
- Bus-based integration - scanning, tracking, catch weight and Zebra labels connect via AL Message Passing, not hard wiring.
